Euless Trinity and the Haka
Sunday, December 6
If you attend the SPHS-Euless Trinity game this Saturday, you'll have the opportunity to see one of their most popular football traditions -- the Haka. The Haka is a traditional dance of the Maori of New Zealand and since 2005, has been performed by the team before each game in the Maori tongue:
This year, however, the team has created its own version of the Haka - one focusing on the important themes of the Trinity football program. From the website:
Beginning in three distinct groups, the conch shell sounds and the team comes together as one. Symbolic of "three rivers merging into one," Coach Lineweaver says, "it also represents the diversity of Trinity High School and the football team with many cultures coming together into one family." And this is only the first few seconds of the new Haka Trinity presented on Monday, September 7. The leader goes on to issue two challenges to the team, to which they reply with an emphatic "IO," or yes in the native tongue. The third challenge is issued to the team and the fans, who reply with an "IO, IO," two yes' giving even more of an emphatic, "[heck] yeah," according to the new Haka's author, Richie Kautai.
Here's a video of the new version of the Haka -- most likely the one we'll see this Saturday (from the back):

SHOUT OUT from Iraq!
Monday, November 23
When we say that the Stony Point football team is being recognized, we also mean internationally. Brothers, sisters, aunts, and uncles are working for us overseas in our armed forces. Some have ties to the football team and follow them week-by-week. One is Easy Company in Iraq. One member has a brother on the team -- Montana!
Thanks for everything you do -- and come home soon!

SPHS Grabs 2 District Co-Championships
Saturday, November 7
Our Freshman Blue team won the district co-championship for their class. With a season record of 7-2, and 6-1 within the district, they lost only to Waco and Leander. They scored a total of 254 points, giving up 83 -- scoring 3 times as many points as their opponents. They averaged 28 points per game, giving up 9. Way to go!
Our Varsity team is sharing the district championship with Cedar Park. This is our third district championship in a row! And we're not done yet!
We Made the Playoffs -- What Does It Mean?
Monday, November 2
For the third year in a row, Stony Point will represent our district in the Division I, 5A playoff bracket. Here are some things to consider for the playoffs. Each year is a little different, so athletes need to listen closely to their coaches for the details.
- Playoffs begin the first week following the conclusion of the regular season, and run for six straight weeks, including the Thanksgiving weekend. Our first round opponent will be from District 15, which is anchored by the Cypress-Fairbanks ISD, northwest of Houston (along 290). The final playoff spots in District 15 are still in play, so we may not know our opponent until after two of their games are finished on Saturday, November 7. The first round game location will either be in Round Rock, or in the NW Houston area (maybe the Berry Center), depending on the opponent.
- The UIL allows playoff games to be scheduled on Thursday, Friday, or Saturday. We won’t know the day, time, or location until each game is finished, and RRISD has contacted and reached an agreement with the next opposing team. As mentioned above, some location agreements are in place for the first round game, depending on the opponent. The 5A Championship games are already set for the San Antonio Alamodome on December 19.
- When the time comes, the coaches will announce which sub-varsity players will continue to practice with the varsity team during the playoff run. Many freshman and JV players may continue to practice during the post-season. It’s up to the coaches, but a few sub-varsity players may be invited to dress out with the varsity during the playoff games.
- Should we make it to the third round of the playoffs, practices would likely be scheduled through the Thanksgiving holiday break.
- Tickets – details are still TBD. If things work the same as last year, expect advanced tickets at reduced prices to only be available at the SPHS campus (not at RRISD), general admission only, student athletic passes are not valid, and gate tickets on the day of the game (higher priced) to cost the same for students and adults.
We offer our congratulations and best wishes to the other three playoff teams representing our district: Westwood, Cedar Park, and Leander. Westwood will play in the Division I bracket with Stony Point, while Leander and Cedar Park will play in Division II.
Football College Recruiting Process
Tuesday, October 27
Je'Mone Smith, formerly of the Philadelphia Eagles, will be at SPHS
Monday, November 9th, to discuss the football college recruiting
process.
From the National Collegiate Scouting Association website:
He thought he knew how the recruiting process worked by watching his older brother become heavily recruited by several major Division I football programs. When it was his turn, Smith realized the process was not the same for every student-athlete. While he was recruited by a few Division I schools during high school, those offers were slowly pulled off the table due to his lack of knowledge about the recruiting process. Fortunately, ls, and was eventually offered and accepted a full scholarship to Indiana University of Pennsylvania.
For Smith, academics were a top priority and while in college he excelled on the field and in the classroom. Before becoming a free agent in the NFL, Smith earned a BA in Criminology/Pre-Law and later a Master's Degree in Labor Relations from IUP. He also has earned a Master's Degree in Human Resources from Chapman University. Smith has been recognized professionally for his public speaking and business leadership skills, and has been designated as a “Competent Toastmaster” for the Toastmasters International Organization. He currently gives educational recruiting seminars for the NCSA around the country. Je’Mone uses his experience with the recruiting process to help today’s student-athletes and their parents understand what they need to do to be successful at the next level.
This seminar is brought to us courtesy of the National Collegiate Scouting Association.

Did You Know . . .
Wednesday, October 21
According to Mr. Loerwald, Athletic Director for the Round Rock Independent School District, we had about 5,800 fans at the Stony Point-McNeil game October 16th. The Athletic Complex seats approximately 5,500 fans on each side, so for SPHS, this was a sell-out!

Varsity Letter Jacket Sizing
Wednesday, October 8
From Susan Lantz, a/k/a the Letter Jacket Lady:
Letter Jacket sizing is this Friday, Oct. 9th before school for Varsity football.
It doesn’t cost money to get an estimate. Please come try on a size or two and fill out an idea sheet. You will get a price estimate to take home to ask your family if you can buy it. I will keep one copy in case a parent wants to call in and pay for the order with a credit card payment. You must be on the varsity roster to qualify. At banquet time it is likely that more patches will be needed for the playoff run! The jackets take 2 months to produce so it’s a good idea to order in October so the jacket can be worn in the winter months.
See you Friday morning,
Susan

SPHS Public Hearing on Boundary Changes
Monday, January 26
RRISD is considering boundary changes in light of the opening of Cedar Ridge High School in 2010. A volunteer committee, RRISD Citizen's Boundary Committee, has been formed and will be working on this issue. As part of the process, the district is holding public hearings at each of the high schools. Stony Point High School hosts the hearing on Tuesday, February 3rd at 6:30pm.
Students of SPHS will be affected in each of the scenarios provided by the RRISD staff. Information on these options can be found on their website.
The boundary committee has also been tasked with providing input on the RRISD staff decision of requiring the class of 2012 to move to the new high school in their junior year.
If you have comments/ideas on these issues, participate in the SPHS public hearing on February 3rd!
